Family Services of the North Shore

Senior and Caregiver Support

Grant Program: Community Grants 2023

Funder: Ian and Rosemary Mottershead Fund

We provided services to vulnerable seniors and caregivers to reduce stress and isolation, and offer resources and a sense of community. We hosted an online Caregiver Support Group and with increase in requests for grief support, we offered in-person groups. We provided workshops and presentations for caregivers and seniors at partner locations. We offered one-to-one support in person, via email and phone. For seniors who were feeling isolated or living with chronic or terminal illness, our volunteers provided weekly phone support, walking companionship and visits. We connected with people each Friday at a local library. We participated in the Caregivers Expo at Silver Harbour and NS Seniors’ Health Expo at the WV Seniors’ Activity Centre.

We reached more seniors and caregivers than expected due to events such as the Caregivers Expo at Silver Harbour and the North Shore Seniors’ Health Expo at West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre. We reached 300 community members across the North Shore, double what we anticipated. We also met over double the number (85) of West Vancouver community members we expected.

We know social isolation is more detrimental to seniors’ health than smoking or obesity and that connection and belonging are antidotes to isolation. Our program provides opportunities for meaningful connection for our volunteers and program recipients.

"We are very appreciative of the generous support provided by the West Vancouver Foundation’s Community grants program. Your contribution has been instrumental in enabling us to continue to offer support to caregivers and seniors living in West Vancouver and all of the North Shore. We have been able to deepen the relationships we have with our volunteers and participants and become a leader in senior and caregiver support programs. The West Vancouver Foundation's support has positioned us to move forward and continue to meet the needs of our community. Thank you!!"
